The South really doesn't prioritize striverism, and in particular seeking to go to the top-ranked (usually private) school you could get into, the way that you see elsewhere, most obviously the northeast. "Scholarships" to state schools are more the envy/bragging-rights fodder for parents than admission to the ivy league (**ESPECIALLY** once you're talking south of HYP; no southerner in history has cared about "brown" or, god forbid, "williams"), and this goes even for kids with rich parents.
My valedictorian made a perfect score on the SAT and went to the state flagship on some kind of arrangement where he basically started working on his PhD right away. Someone poasted the college choices of atlanta-area valedictorians recently and it was all HYP and georgia tech, and I'm telling you that the GT kids in that group are not just HYP rejects. |

Wofford is an odd case of out of state people thinking it is elite, going there, then returning to their home state. Very few in SC know a wofford grad.
Clemson has grown increasingly elite imo and probably is the most elite state university now. |
