Rolen had received 10.2% of the vote in his first year on the ballot in 2018, the lowest first-year percentage ever for a candidate eventually voted in by the BBWAA.[2]

I guess my point is longevity counts for something in baseball, moreso than in other sports, since one player can't win a title by himself. But peak also matters, which is why I like JAWS as the best career value stat.

That said they should’ve just inducted Bonds, Arod, Clemens, etc.

Third basemen we’re historically under included in the hall of fame, since voters tending to group them with 1B (better hitters at easier position).

2B conversely were overvalued.

Which raises the question of whether HOF should include best at each position or the best overall (obviously WAR adjusts for position)

i don't think you can fairly compare "defense" for a 3B vs a 1B/2B

yes, I'm aware that Kent played roughly a season total as a 3B and that Rolen was better at it. doesn't mean Rolen should get in and Kent falls off the ballot.

the initial 10% vote for Rolen was the correct one

and Kent's trump card is MVP; Rolen never got all that close and frankly was rarely if ever the best player on his own team

No, consistently below average at 2B.

The positions have similar defensive value, so if one of them is great at defense and the other one sucks at defense, it's an easy comparison to make.

Rolen was such a multisport Chad: During his senior year at Jasper in 1993, he was named Indiana Mr. Baseball,[2] played tennis, and was named to the Indiana high school basketball All-Star team.[3]

After a flurry of scholarship offers from schools like Oklahoma State and the University of Alabama, Rolen ultimately committed to playing college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs.[4] That commitment was complicated when the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball (MLB) selected Rolen in the second round of the 1993 MLB Draft. Rolen told reporters after the draft that he hoped he could forge a deal that allowed him to play for the Phillies farm system in the summer and on the Georgia basketball team in the winter.[5]

The problem with these arguments is that there is no consensus on whether players at the bottom of the top tier belong in the hall. Like he was obviously better than most of his contemporaries but well below Bonds and even at his position was behind Chipper Jones etc.

A career NL 3B will usually not accumulate the counting stats of an AL RF/DH type that plays to age 42, so I don’t think you can knock him for falling a bit short on counting stats. However I think the biggest criticism of his career is that even in some of his prime years he was not even part of the conversation for MVP. Like if you are 28 and 20+ other guys in your league are more productive - seems meh. I think he needed to peak higher for multiple years to really merit HOF. He basically had one great year and a bunch of years where you were happy to have him but would pick plenty of others ahead of him if redrafting teams.

Part of the issue is that there was a huge glut of players due to the steroid era. So you could only vote for 10 players, but you'd have Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, McGwire, ARod, etc.

There just weren't enough votes to go around.

Johan Santana was probably the best pitcher in baseball for a 5 year stretch and got 2.4% of the vote. If you let him reset his HOF candidacy right now, I'm not sure he doesn't get to 75% eventually.

Santana needed a few more years on the field. This is another ambiguous unwritten rule where voters are all over the map, but he would have had a good shot if his shoulder had held up enough to tack on something equivalent to Glavine's Mets career even though the core of Glavine's candidacy was his dominant years with the Braves. You no long have to win 300 games but you probably need to win 200 or have a very long run of effective seasons on shit teams where voters take pity and focus on other stats.
