He was just a boomer who worshiped Carson enough that they gave him a show. People say he was funny in the 80s but he was about the same in the 90s imo. Leno actually was funny in the 80s.
Also he was always pitched as the less retarded version of Leno but they’re both middlebrow at most. Leno was Turok, Letterman was Coolboarders

It was kind of funny watching him drool all over Phoebe Cates (he had her on like 1000 times), since I could totally relate:

He was funny and wacky in the 80s on his original show (Late Night) that was on after Carson.
When he moved to CBS opposite Leno, his whole personality changed and he just became a grumpy, serious, unfunny asshole.

His NBC show was funny. He wasn't a stand up so his monologue was never that great. The best parts of the show were the little bits he would do after the monologue (e.g., the original viewer mail, Chris Eliot characters, etc.), interviews with interesting people (he had some wacky people on that would never be on Carson-- like Harvey Pekar), and his musical guests (like with other guests, he would have musical acts that Carson/Leno wouldn't touch because they were too small, indy or whatever).
He was always a snarky asshole but it was unique back then when talk show hosts would kiss their guests' ass and basically do hokey monologues about the president.
Kind of like Velvet Underground-- any comedian, talk show host, etc. that you might think is cool and who was old enough to watch or appear on that show gives him credit as being the best/influential
