Welp, laptop has fan problems. Time to replace it.

One immortal truth I've learned is that laptop fan problems are not fixable. You will clean it, it will still make noise. You will replace the bearings, it will still make noise. You will completely replace the whole fan, it will still make noise. Fan dust etc. changes some setting inside the deepest architecture of the PC and it will always make noise until you replace it.

There's no reason replacing the fan wouldn't cure fan noise. The only question is whether you can buy just the fan itself or whether they force you to buy the entire heat sink & fan combo. But even if you have to buy the heatsink it should be ~$50. |

Back in the day, one big advantage for Thinkpad ownership is that they publicly published full blown service manuals complete with all the assembly schematics and parts numbers. They also let ordinary individuals order parts directly from them.
Maybe things have changed but it used to be that virtually all other OEMs were really secretive about their service manuals and parts supply. If a consumer had a hardware problem they were expected to take it to an authorized $ervice center, and you known damn well something as simple as a fan replacement would be far more costly than a DIY repair. |

Once you remove that everything is right there in front of you. Never even thought to look for a manual, and I wouldn't think of buying anything but refurbished Latitudes for business laptops right now. The last Thinkpad I disassembled was a Yoga S1, so it was made about ten years ago. But ALL I was trying to do was replace the battery, it took me half a day, and I had several screws leftover, all different sizes, that I couldn't tell where they came from.
