I think that if Bret stayed, the Attitude Era would have unfolded much differently, and may not have even happened at all.

The WWF already was a lot more edgy in late 1997, but without the Montreal Screwjob, we never would’ve gotten Mr. McMahaon.

Without Mr. McMahon, we never would’ve gotten Austin vs. Vince, and it would’ve taken longer for the WWF to win the Monday night wars (or it may not have even won at all).

Bret would’ve had awesome matches with Stone Cold on top, but would not have embraced the Attitude Era at all.

Discuss.

The hart foundation was a big part of the start of the attitude era. These aren't "what-ifs" because they had major feuds with DX, the Nation of Domination, and Stone Cold. This featured amazing scenes like DX spraypainting "nigger" and "Canada Rulez" all over Farooq's locker room. All of that was clearly part of the Attitude Era even if it had not been branded that way left.

They definitely were a big part of launching it.

But I’m not sure how Bret would’ve felt about Mae Young giving birth to a hand, etc.

He wouldn't have been involved in that. They probably would have feuded him with Ken Shamrock. He also would have been a good rival for jeff jarrett, who was wasted because he had originally been planned to feud with stone cold and then stone cold killed his push.

Did MCmahon wrestle in the 70s-80s? It feels like he saw the Attitude era and couldn't resist joining.

Bret vs. Austin may have headlined WM14 instead of HBK-Austin.
