Men can no longer offer commitment itself, which once leveled the playing field, and only compete on looks and resources - mostly the first, since the median woman outearns the median man, the male mean income being propped up by a few Silicon Valley and Mexican cartel mega-earners. (Housewives are balanced out by salad-tossing male prisoners.) The result is that the top 10% of good-looking males monopolize all women, leaving none for the rest of the men.
Today's situation is more merciful than the hypergamy of antiquity, but markedly worse, for a bottom 90% bro, than the brief golden age (1948-1968 in the United States) in which government intervention guaranteed every man a good job in a factory and a wife to come home to.
