During COVID I took my kid and another couple kids out to the riverside in my town so they could swim a little in the swimming holes that form off tributaries.

We were on one side of the creek and a water moccasin was on the other side. The kids started throwing rocks at it to try to scare it off, and that son of a bitch slid into the water and started swimming straight for us. It got across to our side and slithered right up in spring-pose and we ran away.

I'd never seen an animal that little charge at humans before like that, except maybe a goose.

Yeah. The creepy part was how the snake just shot right toward us, crossed over about 20 feet of water with a dead-on laser focus, and pulled right up on the rock where we had been.

When I was in high school a 25 foot long black snake --not poisonous -- slithered up on our front porch and just sunned himself. When I came up to it it slithered under the porch, and I got a shovel and jammed that shovel hard and blind because I couldn't quite see him. I knew I hit him because the head of the shovel made some dull pinging noises as the snake was biting at it, and then all was quiet. That thing was gigantic.

Yeah, fairly frequently. Rattlesnakes, cottonmouths/water moccasins, copperheads, depending on where I lived at the time. Rattlers I always killed due to location, the others I would kill if they weren't unreachable due to water. Cottonmouths are by far the most dangerous because they're very aggressive, and easy to walk up on.

Snake pits are fucking gnarly, only ever seen one and it immediately made me yearn for a shotgun once I saw how many there were. The one I saw was a rock slope in the sun in Colorado. Probably 15 or 20 rattlers. I was working on a wildfire, and we were warned by locals about the area, or we probably would have walked into them, honestly. They blend in pretty well, even on exposed rock, and it was hard to see them all even looking for them. I threw a few rocks at the ones I could see and the whole cliffside of them coiled up and started rattling, absolutely hair raising.

They're not terrifying unless you run up on one and almost step on it, but they're to be fucked with if you're not confident in killing them. Shovels are the perfect non-firearm weapon for them. I've shot probably 20 of them with pistols, and you need to be ready to magdump that bitch if you fuck up the first shot. I took a shot at one on a log in a creek probably 30y away, missed by about an inch, and it swam to the bank looking for a fight. Shot it probably 10 times when it got out of the water.

They're mean cocksuckers.

The only time I've encountered a wild venomous snake was at a friend's lake house. My brother and I were about to move a canoe when I heard the the distinct sound of rattling and took a step back. I gave the canoe a gentle push and the rattling started again. After that we decided not to mess with the canoe anymore. Never did see the snake though.

Of course. You’ll see rattlesnakes all the time while hiking in the southwest

Only rattlers but they are chill as long as you don’t act like a threat (and even then you can whack them with a shovel pretty easily). CA has the less-scary version of dangerous animals: black bears, rattlers, black widows.

Edit: funny rattlesnake story. My CA redneck aunt offered up her dad’s country place as our wedding venue. Turned out things had gotten pretty unkempt up there as he aged, and rattlesnakes had set up shop throughout the property. Aunt sent video of her with this rattlesnake-catching contraption she had made with PVC pipe and a snare. She would snare the snake, pull its head into the PVC pipe, throw it in her pickup, and drive over to the property of a neighbor she didn’t like and dump it there.
