The competition for everything is higher: getting into schools, having activities, even just having family time. The CPS state means you need an exhaustive level of oversight on your kid at all times, and your kid doesn’t become independent until far later than they should. And you’re doing all of this around two full time jobs, both of which treat employees as fungible commodities that can be replaced as soon as it is profitable or convenient to do so. |

It doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t need to keep up with modern yuppie parenting. Build legos. Cook with them. Go biking with them. That isn’t stressful at all and should bring you happiness. If it doesn’t, then i don’t know; maybe kids aren’t for you.
Constantly shuttling them from activity to activity and ruining your nights and weekends isn’t going to help your happiness and (in 90% of the cases) your kids’ happiness. If you want to teach your kids the value of hard work, team work, etc there are lower stress and cheaper ways to do it than the travel teams, gymnastic gyms, private coaches, music lessons, speciality summer camps etc.
The old people who tell you to enjoy are correct (other than babyhood which is objectively awful). But once they hit 2, they’re like mini humans and before you know it, they’re going to be preteens and hating you. Go enjoy yourself while kids are still innocent. It only gets worse as they get older and life becomes serious - suicide, depression, drugs. The only time to actually be happy is when they love you the most and just want to be with you. And the best memories both you and they will have looking back is family time. |

But easy babies don’t become evil/annoying/shitty kids later in life.
Still the most surprising thing about becoming a parent and dealing with our kids by far is realizing that it’s mostly luck. There are lots of parents we know who really deserve better kids given how cool they are and how much they love and sacrifice for their kids. And there are parents who are actively shitty to their kids and their kids are awesome and don’t let it mess them up. People are complex and different and sometimes two cool people have a kid that takes after a sociopath great uncle or whatever. That’s why Nutella is right that if you have a kid who is not defective and loves you, then putting as much time and focus on that as possible is CR, not striver activities that are 90+% going to seem like at best a more elaborate and expensive way to get them to do something to be creative or get some exercise. |

My husband and I were both 80s latch key kids. Our parents were pretty bad by today’s standards. the outcomes are kind of all over the place despite the parenting.
I feel like each kid you have is basically playing the lottery and there’s only so much you can do. I also don’t believe in upward mobility in this day and age for children. That’s a thing for boomers. Thus, just let go and let them enjoy their childhoods. |

My husband found me in tears watching a google photos “they grow up so fast” video set to sappy music. That said, aside from caring for babies, I just find them so incredibly boring and the play involved in mind numbing. I much prefer little kids. They are so curious, their reasoning skills are hilarious and ask questions you have trouble answering. I write down the things they say so I can look back one day.
I can’t lie and say my life is viscerally happier day to day with children. Probably the happiest was being engaged/married without any responsibilities other than a dog. But I think people do it so that they gain more long term satisfaction and meaning in their lives. At least that’s why I did it. That’s also why I want to try to spend time with my them rather than fill it up with so many activities. |
