Shah's final opponent, Rajashakhalavi Parnamurthyjarparnan, shrieked in horror as she misspelled 'antediluvian' a word that spelling bee insiders consider relatively easy.
Amid gasps from the audience, Parnamurthyjarparnan collapsed and was taken off stage.
"This was a very simple word, one that I practiced for many times," said Shah, 12, who reportedly read and memorized hundreds of dictionaries during his three years of preparation.
"I don't know why [Parnamurthyjarparnan] missed this word. I hope to attend Harvard University," he added.
