Prior to the Ukraine war, there was a serious question about whether the West would give a fuck if Taiwan were invaded. Now China can see that the fractious West can unify quickly when they have a common enemy. Also, they can see the damage that a combination of sanctions plus Western weapons can do even if no American/Western boots are on the ground.
