Amazing. I know that I will reach my destination safely. So, I go back to about Row 35 (where my Silver Premier status has arranged for me to have a middle seat, up against the rear bulkhead), and I settle in for my coast to coaster on a 737. A route that used to call for a wide body, but no more. As I settle in, an obese woman sits in the window, and an obese man sits in the aisle. Away we go. At 10,000 feet, the petite Asian woman in front of me who speaks no English elects to recline her seat right into my face.

He worked pretty hard to do it. The guy he pushed out of his seat jumped over the seat back and started punching him, so they had a short slug fest. Everybody eventually calmed down and nothing else happened. This was on TWA a long time ago.

I was in chemistry class when I heard he had been shot, and in algebra 2 when I heard he had died. It was shocking, but did not upend my world. I remember thinking that it was a pretty sad society when a President could be unelected like that, and immediately wondered if LBJ and Ladybird had anything to do with it. I had heard a lot of LBJ stories out of Texas and Ladybird always brought Lady MacBeth to mind. Apparently that occurred to other people, as "MacBird" was written a years later. We had a school dance planned that week, but it was called off. Our community was split. A lot of people hated Kennedy and thought he should have been killed.

Later I happened to be watching TV when Ruby shot Oswald during live coverage. I was talking to my cousin on the phone when it happened and I remember being so rattled I stuttered from the big adrenaline rush.

I also remember when RFK was shot. I was driving through southern Illinois and stopped for gas in the wee hours after hearing the news on the radio. The attendant (you didn't pump your own gas then) said, "Son of a bitch got what he deserved." Later I stayed many times at the Ambassador Hotel and always thought about the night RFK was killed.

Incredible. I'm always interested in hearing where people were and what went through their minds at pivotal moments in history.

On a related note, have you ever heard of the conspiracy theories that George H.W. Bush is actually the son of Nikola Tesla's German accountant, George H. Scherff? As the story goes, Hitler's bodyguard, Otto Skorenzy, gave a deathbed confession claiming that in 1938, Hitler sent 14-year-old George H.W. Bush (then known as George H. Scherff, Jr.) to the USA to befriend & kill Nikola Tesla. It's further alleged that Prescott Bush was a known nazi who adopted George Scherff Jr. and forged a birth certificate so he would become George H.W. Bush.

There's at least some credibility to the idea of Prescott Bush being associated with Nazis: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2004/sep/25/usa.secondworldwar

But the rest of it seems a little too conspiratorial. Nevertheless, H.W. was involved in some crazy stuff, like possibly working for the CIA as early as 1963 and having a direct role in Kennedy's assassination.

Have not heard the Bush story before. Sounds a little out there, but GHWB was a spook of the old Skull and Bones style. Would not suprise me that he had CIA connections long before he became director in 1976. That world was (and may still be) very clubby and preppy.

Incredible. Do you remember when St. Louis and Pittsburgh and Detroit had airports of note? Now they are all hollowed out shells.

Once, on a domestic flight from LAX back to where I am from, some kid in front of me reclined his chair immediately into my knees at like 200 feet. I yelled at him that he couldn't recline the chair. As soon as he heard the 10,000 foot bell, he dropped the chair back into my knees. It wasn't worth making a protest at all. These people are not polite or courteous. For those who are not Airfluent, flying is torture.

You could always fly private, but I'd suggest bringing a pulse oximeter & your own supplemental O2. Just so you know, the captain has the ability to literally turn off supplemental O2 to the passengers & divert it for the flight crew.

I remember when the Pittsburgh airport had a hotel on the mezzanine level above the ticket counters. There also was a real movie theater in the TWA terminal there. Never spent much time in St. Louis or Detroit airports. I remember when Dulles was nearly empty and you could park in front of the terminal for $2/day. Jetways weren't universal when I was in college, and prop airplanes still flew a lot of routes (DC-6/7; Electra; Constellation). Flying used to be much more relaxed and even elegant. There was no security, people dressed up to travel, and food was generally served, often of pretty good quality. On the shuttle flights up and down both coasts you just walked onto the plane then after it got into the air they rolled a cart down the aisle and took your money. Of course smoking was universal. There were so called non smoking rows, but the planes were smokey throughout. Even pipes and cigars were allowed on many airlines. The flight attendants were all women and were selected based on looks, with weight limits. Some airlines (Pacific Southwest) had stewardesses in hot pants. Continental had a slogan, "We move our tails for you." Pan Am was probably the most elegant US airline. TWA was pretty nice, too. I remember my first TWA 747 flight when it was a new plane. It had a piano bar on the upper deck. I was more energetic then, but I actually looked forward to air travel. Now it feels like abuse. If I win the lottery I'm heading to Netjets.

When I first started going to the Pittsburgh Airport it amazed me at how many flightst they had out of there. I guess it was the US Airways hub. It was a grand airport, built way out in the boonies, but it had everything. It was grander than grand and had that innovative X shape.

Now it's a shell. I'm sure they have entire terminals that are permanently closed off, but I haven't had the reason to fly through there since the mid-2000s, so I don't really know.

There were a lot of conspiracy theories about that crash. I've been in and out of Laguardia and JFK a zillion times - less out of Newark. Had a friend killed on AA 11 that went into the WTC, but otherwise don't know anybody else killed in a crash except for a guy I went to HS with. He was a crop duster and bought himself a Russian aerobatic plane, which he augered in on his first flight. BTW, cropdusters fly around here a lot. They really do some hair raising stuff.

What I like to do in those situations is extend my legs as far as possible under their seat and remove my boat shoes--in which I profusely sweat (sockless) for many hours--to allow my feet to "breathe." The pong of my boat shoes and feet is often enough to convey my indignation.
