I've posited this before, but no one seems to take me seriously, even though I'm dead serious. I am separated from Musk by one degree, and my degree says he is skeptical Musk can even do calculus.
When he said this to me, it hit hard because this wasn't the type of fella to exaggerate like that. Also, I had every reason to believe he talked to Musk. I knew they had interacted, and I always thought it was weird that he and Musk didn't stay in contact. The only explanation I can fathom for that is the one this dood gave me: that Musk was DUMB and didn't know wtf he was saying.

Yeah, come to think of it if he was talking to the dood I know, they were talking about shit that had nothing to do with space. Maybe Musk seemed out of his league because he wasn't coached on this topic in advance.
Also, this was years ago, and if it was Musk who broke off contact (I don't think it was, my guy says he stopped talking to Musk and he has no reason to lie about that), he was an idiot because he is now fully on board with what this dood is saying. He just doesn't have him on Signal like he did before, can't just text a dood and ask questions (which is what he was doing before) after not talking to him for like 3-4 years.

Bro, I took AP calculus sophomore year of HS.
That shit was easy as fuck. I literally could have tought myself a whole semesters worth of calculus over a weekend. Might have needed a second weekend of practice to do well on a test, but the concepts are simple as fuck if you can remotely think abstractly.
And I don't have any particular talent for math. Haven't taken a single math class since.

What got me thinking about this was actually matrix algebra, but I don't want to talk about that right now.
I think I'm like you in that calculus was really intuitive to me. I never understood the difficulty some people seem to encounter. However, my understanding of matrix algebra was entirely formulaic. I could not grasp it intuitively. I've read that a lot of people get one or the other intuitively, and that there seem to be more people who "get" calc.
I actually think this may be wrong, and that people employ matrix algebra without realizing it, sometimes for their entire lives. I have seen at least one IRL example of it. But there are far more people who take calc than matrix algebra, and far more people teaching it it seems. With general awareness levels being so low, people are not inclined to spot matrix algebra in action (e.g. they are blown away by "AI" bullshit that is 95% matrix algebra).

He isn't dumb, but I will grant that he is clearly a liberal artist wordcel and not a STEM brained shape rotator. He's like Steve Jobs in that his uniqueness doesn't come from his technical knowledge but his role as a visionary and leader of multiple high-concept orgs.
That said, he clearly also has technical knowledge. You must not have listened to any of his interviews.

Given that this dood talked to Musk at some point (for a while apparently), but then later stopped, one or the other of them must have made the decision to cease communication.
Let's assume it was Musk. Let's assume he was smart enough to see how dumb my buddy is. He said "fuck this asshole" and bailed. Years later, Musk is slurping the dood's cock, without even fully realizing it it seems. So Musk's earlier assessment of this dood was clearly wrong. He should have kept in contact.
Now let's assume my guy's version of events is correct: that Musk didn't understand what he was saying, and he didn't feel like repeating himself to Musk, just feeding him information for free while Musk asked more dopey questions. Under that version of events, it would make sense that years later, Musk would be slurping this dood's cock without realizing it. This dood is only listed in the footnotes, which Musk won't read, so he thinks he's reading someone else's writing when he's actually reading shit that was written by a dood he used to chat with on Signal, but no longer does.

seems like a bad theory.
hes some chauncey gardiner character who just lucked into becoming the worlds richest man... simultaneously working at the forefront of electric cars, space flight, satellites, social media, batteries, artificial intelligence and payments?
obviously smart people like peter thiel work with him and view him as a peer, never noticing he's actually dumb?

he didn't get a degree in physics. he didn't get into stanford grad school.
that's where his real talent lies: bullshit

he's smart in real life but not by sv stem standards.
that simple. tons and tons of people who work at those companies are way out of his league.
musk is good at other things and then just lies about his stem credentials. working out fine for him. his job is very far removed from needing to do the math his employees do.

i also knew someone who was an elon direct report who complained he wasn't a good rocket engineer.
no shit? well he sure seems to be doing better than most people at owning rockets that go to space

Lmao Steve Jobs couldn't code for shit and probably didn't know calculus, either. Total retards, these guys.
Bro, Elon isn't supposed to be some technical genius. He's an entrepreneur - maybe even the GOAT entrepreneur - and the skills necessary to be a "genius" entrepreneur aren't easily quantified.

he's obviously smart just from listening to him talk
you can tell how smart any person is just from listening to them talk for a few minutes. if you don't understand this/can't do it, you're not smart
this is by far the most effective practical irl IQ test and everybody who is actually smart knows this

I'm also one degree removed from him via someone who worked C-level at Tesla with him.
Elon is fairly smart, but he's extremely execution focused more than nearly anyone else in SV. He manages a lot of people way smarter than him to work towards his goals, which is deceptively hard to pull off.

No, but I'm open to the *possibility* that in acquiring twitter he's playing to all of his weaknesses and few of his strengths.
Twitter sucked as a business enterprise before musk, so you can't really say he "ran it into the ground" regardless of what happens, but he probably overpaid for it.

the screen goes dark in elon musk's office as gwynne shotwell signs off, trying to hide her disgust at his ignorance of laser comms, polar orbits, and what "megahertz" are. elon smugly rips a bong as he fires up league of legends, having frauded his way through yet another day as a leading tech entrepreneur.
suddenly his door shatters inward from a powerful kung-fu kick. elon spills his bongwater on his pants as he staggers to his feet. a jacked 6'4" pumo strides through the doorway. and he's holding a copy of arnold's classical mechanics.
"i'm invoking the 25th amendment on you, elon," the pumo snarls, his voice rich, deep and menacing. "you're just a wordcel charlatan. and we're going to prove it, right here, right now. you have to do every proof in this book, or i'm going to take your companies."
elon musk, crying, losing hope, squeezes his eyes shut wordlessly and turns to the first exercise. he stares at it blankly. after a while, his head hangs in impotent shame.
the pumo smirks at the textbook and apostrophizes it: "thou has conquered, galilean space." then he throws broken bum elon musk onto the street and sits down to take rightful possession of his empire.
