it's possible but the juice ain't worth the squeeze and i'm a super prole goy mr. fixit. it's roundly considered the worst contracting job and why roofers are dominated by teams of spics. the cost is all labor, illegal labor, and the prices are still that high for a reason.

agree with you. landscaping is truly backbreaking, low skill labor with a large degree of latitude. roofs need to be done more or less the right way or it will leak. takes more skill, is more dangerous, and that's why those guys get paid more.

if tsinah was referring to ultra unskilled landscapers like pushing wheelbarrows of rock, i see what he means. but yeah, lots of landscapers are basically artisan tier. it takes a lot of skill to design something that looks nice and maintain it. choosing plants, knowing their growing conditions, what it'll look like when they mature, etc.

just like any artisan they'll have some bitch boi spics to do the mindless grunt work. but that's like saying a custom cabinet maker's spic slave is in the same tier because he hauls all the wood and does other bitchwork.

i think its safe to assume we are talking about the grunts.

but the grunts still need to do some things like accuracy and precision, like trimming and edging, and even brick laying. a roofer just has a staple gun and tries not to fall off drunk

right. that's why "landscaper" doesn't make much sense to me since there is a wide spectrum whereas there's really on one tier of roofer. it's like "cabinet installer" could be a retard from lowes installing prefab shit or a guy building hardwood cabinets from scratch.

its doable. I roofed a couple of houses in high school. It takes some practice and I'm sure I did a shit job, but its not a big deal--for shingles.

compared to the cost of other home projects, especially those that take much longer than a day, it's quite high. what other job would cost 12k for a day's work?

not saying i'm getting ripped off. i shopped around. prices were 11.5-13.5k. got like 10 estimates and none were lowballs or totally outrageous either. that's obviously the going rate. just wondering where the money is going.

surprised profit margin is that high given how close all the quotes are. you'd think there's have been a greater range of my quotes since ones desperate for work would have tried being more competitive.

i've got quotes on projects where the prices were all over the map and ranged by like 50% from top to bottom. there, it's clear that some are gouging and hoping to land a big fish, and others are desperate for work and will take low margins in order to get jobs

materials - well understood and same across the board

labor - well understood and same across the board

margins - no need to go lower than industry standard cuz everyone is fully booked all the time anyways

go start a roofing company then, moishe.

wrangling teams of spics to be on time and do quality work, dealing with insane homeowners, marketing yourself, doing quotes, all the general small business tasks, etc. etc.

there is a reason finding a quality contractor is as valuable as gold. same with auto mechanic. if those margins represented big easy money the industry would be gobbled about by PE.

it is. you just underestimate how many hours go into generating that 30-40%. if you broke it down into an hourly rate it's usually not very glamorous outside of a select few local contractor kings.

we work in an industry where you get 33% of a large settlement for sending a "send limits" email to an adjuster. do you really think that contractors are working less for their cut than the average attorney?

i have a network of friends in all industries: contracting, medical, professional, etc. i know they take care of me. i'm going out with my dentist next week after an appointment, who has performed tens of thousands of dollars of free dental work for me. in turn, he has called me for off-the-cuff legal advice, which i have freely given.

this is what a high trust society looks like. the fact you people don't even understand it is always stunning to me. especially when you immediately jump to how much time it took *you* without considering how much of others time you wasted. you have no empathy for the goyim. and also how "your guy" may treat you differently if you're hunting around for quotes. if someone i considered a friend and i was giving a friend rate to for legal services started shopping attorneys, i would begin treating him like an ordinary client.

That seems in line, depends on the pitch of the roof and its complexity.

One cost is workers’ comp insurance for roofers is insanely expensive so that drives up the labor cost.

If you are reasonably fit you can roof your own house, but fuck that.

Guy who represents several roofing companies here

- all of the owners are rich proles. One owner I know has like two huge RV buses and six harleys, and his garage had like 4 of those huge gun safes that he says holds "a lot of guns". nonstop toys for this guy

- another company I rep - the owners are south american "migrants" - cool as fuck dudes - worth millions in their mid to late 20s solely from the roofing biz (I've seen their net worth)

- the work is actually dangerous as fuck

- the work is extremely labor intensive

- hard to keep employees

- the business is shady - they often use drones to fly over neighborhoods after a storm to find "damage" and then hound homeowners with a "sales team"

- they also regularly go up to do a free "roof evaluation" and find like one worn out shingle and use that to show the homeowner that they need a new roof

- homeowners insurance is often the primary source of payment for these jobs, so many times the homeowner isn't even paying out of pocket for them. I've had many many disputes with homeowners who refused to hand over money that they insurance company sent them to pay for the roof

Please explain this one. Are these people who understand they are supposed to hand the check over and just want to be difficult in the hopes of keeping some of it, or are these ppl who don't understand why they are even getting a check, or something else.

they supposedly "understand" that they get a check from the insurance comapny that they have to sign (often the check is written to both the homeowner and the roofing co, homeowner has to sign it, other times insurance company pays homeowner directly and is honor system supposed to pay that amount to roofer).

usually there is some dispute about the quality of work or something so the homeowner refuses to pay the money to the roofer. Other times the homeowner is just a moron and thinks they can pocket it.

a big part of the roofing companies jobs is to explain this shit to the homeowners and stay on top of them to issue payment to them. Usually there is no cost to the homeowner for these new roofs if there is a need to replace them (which is part of the fraud of this industry, many times people are sold new roof when they don't need it)

Funny story, lots of insurance companies won’t write policies with a roof over X years old (20-30 years). As the roof on my house is pushing 100 years old, this was an issue.

That doesn’t sound right. They depreciate the roof based on age. You don’t get 100% for a 20 year old roof. Right?

You can get insurance with full replacement value. Most policies are this way, it would be odd not to have that so your roof gets fucked or kitchen flooded you get a new one.

people would rather avoid doing their own roofing when possible, unlike various other home improvement projects. aside from the risks of falling, roofing is boring. i did one portion of a roof a while ago, and the entire process was tedious and mind-numbing.

-remove the existing shingles

-remove the tarpaper underneath

-inspect the wood underneath; replace anything with water damage

-inspect the rafters and the connections between rafters and the wood; nail down anything getting loose

-re-paper the wood

-individually tar and re-shingle the entire surface

it was horrifically dull. i would rather dig fence posts again than do more roofing, and i hate doing fences.

also, despite the low skill level generally, it is easy for some diy guy to fuck it up. like, you could probably learn all of roofing in a day, but if you don't have that knowledge and are going in based on youtube videos you are really risking fucking something up bigly.

if you fuck up most diy projects it's nbd to wait until a real prole goy comes and fixes your mistake. if you fuck up your roof? ljl.

well yeah; you absolutely have to keep water from infiltrating into the wood under the shingles and the tarpaper. there are specific methods of checking your work to ensure that this is the case, and it's kind of easy to accidentally miss this part, because it is also boring.

exactly. There are some pretty huge consequences if you fuck it up.

its not hard to do, per say, but I'd rather have some 90IQ dude who has been doing these for years do it than me try it

I did this as a kid on our big house.

It seemed sort of chill but like the idea that a middle (or even lower class family) would re-shingle their own roof and have their 12 year old kid help is just completely incrompehensible in 2024.

$11.5k for a roof is very cheap. I have budgeted $30k for mine when it will be needed.

It is not one day's work. Or shouldn't be. Properly done, this should take about 5 days with one Mexican doing it. Assuming he works from morning till night.
