the thing is, this emptying of your life energy to fill up their lives is the basic bargain of human life. Asking why it should be this way is as pointless as asking about why gravity or something, and attempts to "find a better way" are doomed.
Kids give you meaning and that's a simple existential fact.
You just WILL feel fulfilled when your kid scores a touchdown or does some morally courageous act, and this displacement of your identity into his happens despite any "psychological" criticism of how it should ackshually not be this way.
You will love them and find happiness in their happiness, in way that makes even spousal love or child-towards-parent love seem petty.
You will lose in the deal, but you will be happy to lose. Best I can express it.
