You should buy a book on the series and go through them sometime.
I don't specialize in modern coinage, but I have a 1942 Russian 10 Kopek (nickel-size, non-silver small denomination coin) that's rare because Leningrad was under siege at the time it was minted; obviously, not many of these were made.
It's interesting to know the history behind old coins... they're literally artifacts from past times.

There are three classes in the coin world: dealer, collector (what I think you're interested in), and numismatist (researcher).
It's hard to be a collector without the numismatic/research side to aid you.
Your only defense against scams & getting ripped off is knowledge, and you're only going to get that through research. The internet can be useful (though not often), but you really need a numismatic library & some degree of activity in the field like attending shows.
Fortunately, shows range from free to $10, and books can be had for good prices nowadays (because nobody reads anymore).
