I had one. Super nice, smart guy until he got one drink in him, then he was "Bloody Mike." That's what everyone called him after an incident I never witnessed. He also had no memory of it and said he just woke up with his head stuck to the pillow from all the dried blood. He was strong and knew how to fight competitively, and everyone got kicked or decked by him at least once for no reason.

I always found the Begbie relationship in Trainspotting to be a bit weird. There's a pretty big age gap between him and everyone else. IRL there's about a 10 year gap between him and the rest of the actors but in the film the gap seemed even bigger.

He didn't do drugs while all the rest of them did. He was too short & ugly for him to be a potential match for the girls in that social circle.

Why were any of them hanging out with him?

The book/movie title is actually a reference to Begbie's backstory, but the movie doesn't go there at all. The "story" is really all about him.
