Columbia is fucked

Columbia neighborhood is shit and the draw is that you get kind of a real campus Oasis in the city, with actual quads where you can play Frisbee or sunbathe. Now classes are online, the quads are an eyesore of tents and banners (may as well just hang out in Central park) and students are stuck in an overpriced student ghetto surrounded by an actual ghetto with no good communal/ outdoor spaces. If the tents stay up a few weeks it will kill the grass and it will be too hot to grow new grass until fall. At a place like BU with a sprawling campus students can still use other outdoor spaces and there's other places to do visitor tours with protests out of site. Imagine visiting Columbia now. Drive through the hood and then you get to an even uglier scene at the actual campus, which looks like a homeless encampment. And unlike a brown or other New England lib arts school, Columbia isn't courting SJWs. Finance bros and foreigners aren't going to appreciate walking through the blue hair gauntlet. There was a small student sit in last fall and the university shut it down fast. Even had police arrest the students. |

There's a wow factor when the campus has beautiful architecture, blooming flowers and hot coeds sunbathing on pristine lawns. If the quad is closed for renovation, it's not only ugly but also empty. Schools have an incentive to have alum be successful and occupy influential positions, which arrest records would inhibit. Arrests won't stop protests, and may just escalate campus tensions. But I think the key is admin ego. Resorting to calling the police makes it look like the admin is incompetent and can't control the school's own affairs. These schools need to police themselves. It's like a tough love parent calling the cops on his or her own kids.
