No matter where you are you're only as free as the ability of the jury of public opinion allows you to be, and this is one topic I tend to side with the libs on even if aspects of their movement has been colonized by pretty awful things. I never cared for eg "Piss Christ" but I could still appreciate it after hearing the artist's intent, not something I'd buy or put into my home, but it was his work of passion project and came from an apparently religious perspective
The complexity of a grail quest to "obtain immortality" becomes blasphemous and a cause to morally convict even when anyone sane knows such things to not exist in a concrete fashion, and if the people observing your work aren't familiar with the literary context from which these sentiments sprung ("the grail" is often a metaphor for spiritual renewal, with immortality being love, offspring, legacy, etc) you're at the mercy of philistines and people who interpret the man-made magic that gives and directs life-purpose in the world with all the care and delicacy of a drunken mob of slavic conscripts looting a china shop
