The economic aim of nationalism was to create larger polities that combined a larger labor pool, more varied human capital, and dispersed natural resources into one 'economic unit' that could compete on a bigger scale, with other countries. The cultural arguments boiled down to 'we share the same history, similar culture and language; let's unite and harness the power of the whole that's greater than the sum of its parts'.

With globalism, we make those same arguments except on larger scales -- e.g. Europe being a somewhat distinct cultural entity that would be economically stronger as one bloc to combine German engineering prowess, British financial expertise, Dutch commercialism, etc.

From a capitalist, free market, and free trade pov, the strongest argument for me has always been FA Hayek in "The Use of Knowledge in Society" where Wikipedia describes him as arguing that the price mechanism serves to share and synchronise local and personal knowledge, allowing society's members to achieve diverse and complicated ends through a principle of spontaneous self-organization. He contrasted the use of the price mechanism with central planning, arguing that the former allows for more rapid adaptation to changes in particular circumstances of time and place.
