For example, they put my ex in a retarded Christian homeschool program where everything was from a Christian perspective - one that stands out was a bible based Economics course - and instead of teaching her they just told her to read the material and take the tests. when she tried to do an LPN to RN bridge program at the local community college, they told her she'd need to get her GED. I was astonished until I saw the HS curriculum she'd done and realized how retarded it was.
They also played a very negative role in our marriage; encouraging my ex to move back home cross-country, building a mother-in law apartment for her so that she'd move back, etc. Her father said I was godless because I'm vocal about my distaste for prosperity gospel televangelists.

Their main supplier, a European company, saw the grandparents' business as a way to establish a retail foothold in the US, and approached the grandparents in the late 90s to see if they'd sell, but they were still working age and weren't quite ready to retire. Around a decade later they approached the company's US president ready to sell, but he told them that the company wasn't interested anymore, however he and his 40 year old son would like to buy it.
It turns out that this was bullshit; the company was still very interested in buying their business. the US president was simply hoping to buy the business for $20M and sell it to his company for $25M. When the company caught wind of the plan they fired the US president and told him and his son to fuck off. Now stuck with a business they never intended to run, the dad hands over daily management to his son.
Immediately the son starts spending like it's going out of style. He immediately spends several hundred k turning the formerly utilitarian office space into a luxurious mahogany paneled suite, complete with filtration system so he can smoke cigars. He also buys a $1M mcmansion in town and a another in the southwest, plus four brand new Porsche Cayenne Turbos (two black and two white) so he and his wife would each have a Cayenne at both houses, and starts taking employees on $$$$ trips to Vegas, then knocks up his secretary - a woman from Barbados or Jamaica or something - and gets divorced and shacks up with his new baby momma.
Despite the fact that they'd just bought a very successful business and were given sweetheart leases at $1/ft^2, when the going rate for prime retail was $2.50 to $3.50/ft^2, the son decides he's a turnaround artist and fires all of the upper management, eliminates employee profit sharing and reduces employee pay, which cost him a bunch of loyal employees. He also starts consolidating locations and closes the branch located at the busiest intersection in town, only to immediately open up another location nearby with less traffic and zero visibility from the road just two miles away. Oh, and he agreed to pay $2.54 per square foot and personally guaranteed $400k in change orders by the contractor.
Less than 10 years later, the business was loaded with debt and had lost more than 40% of its revenue compared to the early 2000s. In just 8 years it went from $21M annually to just under $12M annually, so bankruptcy was inevitable. The kid, having personally guaranteed $400k in change orders, had his house taken by the contractor. My wife's grandparents sold most of the commercial property after that.
Despite being very successful, her grandparents are super frugal and down to earth. Her grandfather once told me that he thought the kid had just hidden all the money somewhere because he couldn't wrap his head around a guy squandering millions of dollars like the kid had. On our honeymoon we went to Oahu where her grandfather lives and stayed in one of their 6 condos in Waikiki. I think we were going to stay in their condo in Trump Tower, but a Japanese businessman had rented it for several months, so we stayed at a more modest one. One day we were at the beach with her granddad and, having read that every Trump Tower condo was finished differently, I asked him a question about the interior finishes in his. "I don't know. Never seen it. I've never seen any of our condos" was his reply. This, despite spending every morning at Ala Moana beach just steps away from all 6 of them every day for years.
The only extravagant purchase he ever made was a brand new 1990 Mercedes SL convertible for about $100k. He was so embarrassed at having spent that kind of money on a car and worried that his blue collar employees would think differently of him that he let the car sit in his garage for 6 months before driving it to work.
They're just good people. Very down to earth, blue collar types. Her grandmother came from a working class family and had my wife's mom when she was like 15 years old or something, so she knows what poverty is like and never forgot it. |
