It isn't her fault that from her first conscious memory everyone told her going to college pays for itself long-term, private universities are always better than public universities. Nor is it her fault we make it impossible for students to default and allow creditors to lend money to any schmuck with the guarantee that in the event she defaults, govt. if will pay them back. This idiotic system creates the incentive for creditors to lend as much money as possible to anyone because it is guaranteed PROFIT and allows universities to raise tuition at twice the rate of inflation every year.
We've designed a idiotic system for funding of higher education. That's the reason things like this story happen. "Bootstraps ideology" won't prevent this from happening we need system wide reform.

"I chose to attend a top 70 school — and why not? It had everything: prestige, great location, typical campus, every major under the sun… the full college experience."

:D is right here. The problem is the system not the individual. Our system of funding higher education has lead to a hole host of public policy programs (predatory lending, massive debt pwnage, rapidly increasing tuition) and failed to accomplish its stated goal (to keep the U.S. the leader in % of college grads). We need to change the system if we want to prevent like this from happening.

The stated goal is a fucking waste of time as well. Polisci grads are fucking useless. We need math/science guys and the rest should be in the military preparing to plunder natural resources.
we don't even need that many math/science grads either. a simple 20 minute intelligence test should be administered after K-12 education is completed. bottom 90% of people should be directed into fields which require minimal training, or trades. scores will be used by employers in place of the massively inefficient signaling mechanism that is undergraduate education
i think that's best determined on the job. IQ test results would be used by employers in combination with high school grades (good correlate of conscientiousness) to place people in their initial positions within companies. they would then rise and fall according to their demonstrated efforts and skills
yeah, i think it is quite important. i don't want an IQ focused society, but i think it's a highly useful tool when used in conjunction with other measures

I don't feel bad at all. When I was choose where to go for college money certainly mattered and if I didn't consider the costs I certainly would have gone to a different school. She lived a 4 year paid vacation (she fucking studied abroad, as a poor she thought she could do this?) and now has to pay up. Fuck her.
Btw her debt is $1,600 a month. That's certainly doable if she's living at home. At $40k a year in IL, she's bringing home post tax $2500 a month. After a few years she can work her way to $60k which is $3600 a month. At this point she can prob move out of her parents house.
Maybe she should clean tables at night or bartend. I am GLAD students loans are non dischargeable.

I'm glad you made the right decisions but the current system needs to be changed. The current structure is leading to a whole host of problems with little benefits. The point of public policy isn't to promote personal responsibility it is to create good policy outcomes. The current structure doesn't do so and needs to be reformed.

Holding her accountable in this context means not letting her discharge her debt. The reason college cost so much and people end up getting so many useless degrees is that student loans aren't dischargeable.
If they were dischargeable creditors wouldn't lend you 200k to go Northeastern. HS seniors like this chick would be forced to go to public university and study useful shit. We would all benefit from this. If you do punish her, even more HS seniors will just repeat her mistakes.
As such, it makes more sense to let her loans be discharged because if you don't we'll have even more people like her in 5 years. Obviously, violates the principal of personal responsibility but better public policy outcomes are more important.

of course, that would be optimal. But we KNOW PEOPLE WON'T DO THAT, as we learned from the last decade with the proliferation of TTT, NINJA Loans, Sup-prime loans, etc., that helped cause our economy to collapse.
So let's prevent idiots from taking on debt they can't afford by ending easy credit. The best way to end easy credit is by allowing people to discharge their debts if the degree failed to bring an income in line with the loans. Creditors as a result will act responsibly and not lend people money to go to Northeastern. Tuition costs will start going down, less people will go to college, more people will get useful majors at cheaper colleges.

It's like a retard test. You are RETARDED if you think taking out $200k in loans for a college degree is a good idea.
This is what people like her want though. FUCK THEM. I hate people who can't add 1+1=2. This isn't dropping $150k on Vandy law, this is $200k for Northeastern sociology degree.
