A lot of Mainland film from the 70s and 80s still hasn't been professionally translated into English Generally the reasons CCP film endeavors failed are the same as to their Soviet counterparts: peevish MASSOLIT type bureaucrats holding the censorial rod, unsocialized peasant populations lacking taste for what's rareified in cinema, and a general lack of resources ponied up for anything beyond what's "high concept" enough to appeal to both party and people |

Date: May 28th, 2025 2:31 PM Author: Provocative Black Lodge kurosawa was wildly popular and pedestrian, think spielberg. he was not critically acclaimed and while he brought japanese cinema international, it is the cinephile and cineaste set that really worships him. japanese at the time thought his films were immature, too western and flashy. it is funny to me that white liberals worship kurosawa now.
chinese cinema was closed off for many decades and unknown to the west. there are many great directors, more recently the fifth generation, zhang yimou and chen kaige being personal favorites. the fact that barely anyone knows these names tells me that you guys think chinese cinema is jackie chan in rush hour. |
