Shenandoah battlefields are not top tier because it was mostly widespread skirmishes with cavalry covering lots of ground rather than a clear pitched battle where you can turn it into a park with good explanations. So they have named battlefields that are a random secondary forest or a field with a couple signs and a road running through it. A ton of stuff happened in Winchester and it’s not a bad place to stop, but it’s nothing amazing from a current tourism perspective. Staunton and Lexington are fine places to stop for food or rest and see a cute old town, but keep expectations moderate. If going further north, Antietam and Gettysburg are not super far off the highway and well-preserved, 180 battlefields.
Lots of good nature stops in the valley - caves, natural bridge, vistas and so on.
It’s a 180 area but more a chill couples or family long weekend trip than a place with amazing attractions for a dude driving through.
