not really. the 5090 is the only decent card and there's zero availability, so the AIBs have marked up the cards 50% over MSRP and then the few cards that have been shipped are being scalped for $700 - $1500 above that.
So you have this card, that was a marginal value proposition at the $2k price it was supposed to sell for, only available on ebay where the lowest price you can get some piece of shit bottom barrel PNY card or something like that is around $3500.
I was going to buy one because I did a completely new build and I wanted a new card too, but it's not $3500 better than the 4090 I already have.

well for example, i want to do a replay of cyberpunk at 4k 144hz full max and a 5090 needs less sacrifices
if you try to run this game maxed without dlss and frame generation, it wont even do 60fps even on a 5090
i also have a very high rez vr headset and you can never have too much supersampling with vr
but nothing "requires" a 5090. a 4090 is perfectly adequate and gives a good experience for literally all use cases

redditors are VERY unhappy with the 5000 series.
many are jumping to the AMD RX 9070 XT which I think is a lot cheaper

I looked into it but seems like it isn't really "better":
https://www.pcguide.com/gpu/rtx-5080-vs-rtx-4090/
"On the other hand, the RTX 5080 managed 151 FPS at 4K (an 11% increase) and 72 FPS at 4K (only a 2.7% increase). So, at higher resolutions, we can see that the RTX 4090 has an edge, even if it is just by a bit; however, when we consider their price tags, the RTX 5080 is a much better option as it delivers almost the same performance at 4K and better at lower resolutions providing excellent value."
"That being said, it gets even better. We enabled DLSS 4 and Multi-Frame Generation to run Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K Ray Traced. The FPS went up from 19 FPS to 183 FPS with MFG set to 4X, which is a difference of 31% compared to what the RTX 4090 could manage with DLSS 3."

Are you a foreigner? Why don't you put this subthread into chatgpt and ask it to explain it to you in your native language? My point is that companies still chose to use ivr systems, despite knowing damn good and well that 100.00% (there is a +/- 0.5% margin of error, but this seems unrealistically large to me) of consumers fucking hate them, because the alternative is "Hellooo my name is Linda" from Dharavi, which is customer service that literally only seems good in comparison to a poorly-functioning automated phone system that you know from the first question is never going to actually solve your problem, if that problem falls outside of a small subset of issues -- telling me that my CC was declined, telling me that my package is still on the way but running late (because I'm too retarded to check the tracking myself), etc. -- that probably cover <5% of customer-service calls made by college-educated whites under 70.
AI expands that subset of problems a little -- maybe now it'll give you a refund on an item under $150 if tracking shows the item is lost -- but not much. Part of this choice is still just (like it was with ivr systems) companies not valuing customer service, as it's a labor-intensive cost center that caters to a segment of consumers highly likely to be 'problem children' anyway. They're perfectly fine with the experience being a deterrent, and with losing those customers who nonetheless continue to seek out customer service.
Ergo, the fact that AI is displacing humans in this field is not exactly a ringing endorsement of AI.

FPS differences (from Grok) - tl;dr it is much more significant than you're describing:
To provide an accurate comparison of FPS (frames per second) between the RTX 3080 and RTX 5080 at similar resolutions without DLSS Frame Generation, we need to focus on raw performance data, excluding any AI-driven upscaling or frame generation technologies like DLSS. Since the RTX 5080 is a newer GPU from NVIDIA's Blackwell architecture (released in early 2025), and the RTX 3080 is from the Ampere architecture (released in 2020), the performance gap reflects advancements in hardware and architecture over two generations. However, exact FPS numbers depend on the specific game, resolution, and settings used. Based on available data and trends as of March 26, 2025, here’s a detailed breakdown:
### General Performance Difference
The RTX 5080 offers significant improvements over the RTX 3080, including more CUDA cores (10,752 vs. 8,704), a more efficient 4nm process (vs. 8nm), higher clock speeds, and increased memory bandwidth (960 GB/s vs. 760.3 GB/s) with 16 GB of GDDR7 VRAM compared to the RTX 3080's 10 GB of GDDR6X. Without DLSS or frame generation, the RTX 5080’s raw performance is typically reported to be 40-60% higher than the RTX 3080, depending on the workload and resolution. This estimate comes from aggregate benchmark data and gaming tests conducted in early 2025.
### FPS Comparison by Resolution
Below are approximate FPS values for the RTX 3080 and RTX 5080 at common resolutions (1080p, 1440p, and 4K) in modern AAA games, based on averages from benchmarks like 3DMark and real-world gaming tests from sources available up to March 2025. These assume maximum settings without ray tracing or DLSS, focusing solely on rasterization performance:
#### 1080p (Full HD)
- **RTX 3080**: 120-150 FPS
- **RTX 5080**: 180-225 FPS
- **Difference**: ~50-60% higher FPS for the RTX 5080
- **Notes**: At 1080p, both GPUs are often CPU-limited in less demanding titles, but the RTX 5080’s higher core count and clock speeds pull ahead in GPU-bound scenarios.
#### 1440p (QHD)
- **RTX 3080**: 90-110 FPS
- **RTX 5080**: 135-165 FPS
- **Difference**: ~50-55% higher FPS for the RTX 5080
- **Notes**: This resolution highlights the RTX 5080’s advantage more clearly, as it leverages its increased VRAM and bandwidth for modern games with high-resolution textures.
#### 4K (Ultra HD)
- **RTX 3080**: 40-60 FPS
- **RTX 5080**: 60-90 FPS
- **Difference**: ~40-50% higher FPS for the RTX 5080
- **Notes**: At 4K, the RTX 3080 starts to struggle with only 10 GB of VRAM in newer titles, while the RTX 5080’s 16 GB and superior architecture maintain smoother performance.
### Specific Game Examples
Here are some illustrative FPS numbers from demanding games tested in early 2025, without DLSS or frame generation, at 4K resolution with max settings (no ray tracing):
- **Cyberpunk 2077**:
- RTX 3080: ~30-35 FPS
- RTX 5080: ~50-55 FPS (~50-60% uplift)
- **Red Dead Redemption 2**:
- RTX 3080: ~50-55 FPS
- RTX 5080: ~70-75 FPS (~35-40% uplift)
- **Assassin’s Creed Mirage**:
- RTX 3080: ~45-50 FPS
- RTX 5080: ~65-70 FPS (~40-45% uplift)
### Key Observations
1. **Resolution Impact**: The performance gap narrows slightly at 4K due to the increased demand on VRAM and memory bandwidth, where the RTX 3080’s 10 GB can become a bottleneck, while the RTX 5080’s 16 GB handles it better.
2. **Game Dependency**: Titles with heavy reliance on shader performance or texture quality show a larger gap, while older or less demanding games may show smaller differences.
3. **No DLSS Context**: Without DLSS, these numbers reflect pure rendering power. The RTX 5080’s advantage would widen significantly with DLSS 4’s Multi Frame Generation, but per your request, this is excluded.
### Conclusion
At similar resolutions without DLSS Frame Generation, the RTX 5080 delivers approximately 40-60% more FPS than the RTX 3080, with the exact difference varying by game and resolution. For a rough estimate:
- 1080p: 180-225 FPS (RTX 5080) vs. 120-150 FPS (RTX 3080)
- 1440p: 135-165 FPS (RTX 5080) vs. 90-110 FPS (RTX 3080)
- 4K: 60-90 FPS (RTX 5080) vs. 40-60 FPS (RTX 3080)
These are generalized figures based on the latest data as of March 26, 2025. For precise FPS in a specific game, testing with your exact setup would be ideal, as variables like CPU pairing and driver optimizations can influence results.
