Generally, they aren't fairplay whodunnits where you're presented with the facts, and can logically solve them. I think the first season espidoes that were based on books had more of that element, but beyond that, they are more in the "police procedural" style, albeit with a cozy village setting instead of a harder urban edge.

watched death's shadow and strangler's wood (both s2) so far. they either omit necessary info that you need to solve (it's okay to be very subtle, but it should be there) or they obviously leave things hanging that you know are where the solution lies.

what's a better brit whodunnit

It's a bit hit-or-miss, and probably less than half the episodes are fair whodunnits (generally those based on the Colin Dexter books instead of written by the production team...although iirc even some of those introduce necessary clues very late, so they end up being more procedural).

There aren't many in the true agatha christie sense, and all either suffer from bad production values or a mix of weak episodes. The Granada Sherlock Holmes series, Morse, Poirot, and the 1980s Miss Marple are my favorite British mystery series, though many or most of the Sherlock and Morse are not true whodunnit.

Older stuff:

- Alleyn Mysteries (available on youtube) is from novels of Ngaio Marsh, a Christie contemporary. She was sort of a less ingenious Christie, so her books tend to be easy for the experienced reader to solve. The show can be a bit slow and low production, but almost every episode is a fair play whodunnit. IIRC, Scales of Justice and Hand in Glove were the best. There are only about 8 episodes.

- PD James / Inspector Dalgliesh (many on youtube). Unfortunately, most of these the production is just too shitty to get into them, but some of the books are good whodunnits. They rebooted the series in the 90s with better production, but only made a couple I think. I think Death in Holy Orders was a good newer one. Shroud for a Nightingale was a very good book, but the episode was an old one and I can't remember if it's any good.

- Campion (Margery Allingham). Another Christie contemporary, but many of the novels were sort of quirky and not whodunnits. Show isn't great, but a couple of episodes were decent. Police at the Funeral I remember being pretty good. I think most are on youtube.

- Wimsey (Dorothy Sayers). Another Christie Contemporary, novels more literary and bloated and not all whodunnits. They did 2 series, one in the 70s and then again in the late 80s with a new actor. 70s one the episodes are too long and dull. Newer one is a bit more watchable but not great. (both on youtube iirc)

- Not British, but A&E adapted a bunch of Nero Wolfe novels and short stories with Timothy Hutton in early 2000s. Not always true whodunnits, but sometimes are, and they're light and can be kind of funny/snappy dialogue. (youtube)

Newer:

- Lewis is a Morse sequel and Endeavour a Morse prequel. Both are new so have good production compared to most of the older shows. Not great mysteries, more in the Midsomer vein of not really clueing things properly but being decent entertainment.

i was thinking of trying the 80s marple stuff bc i like christie, but i generally dont like women characters bc im sexist and thought marple was annoying on poirot. is it worth giving it a try?

They tend to be slower and talkier than Poirot episodes/novels, but I think the 80s Marple series was generally quite good. They adapted all the Marple novels. The newer series was pretty bad IMO, and often deviated from the novels or adapted non-Marple novels into Marple episodes.

That wasn't Marple in the Poirot series, the character was Ariadne Oliver.

Best are probably A Murder is Announced, The 4:50 from Paddington, Murder at the Vicarage, maybe A Pocket Full of Rye and Sleeping Murder.

Older seasons but I can't watch any of the current British stuff now that its gay diversity crap. It's fucking LOL that this is supposed to be an English country town but then make some character a Sikh or something, but the Sihk has typical English UMC hobbies like bird watching or whatever.

Yes, all of them. The lack of in your face diversity drew me in but as another poster mentioned you see it infiltrating starting in later seasons.

Check out Endeavour on Amazon Prime. Another Brit murder show that I enjoyed.
