I was very very immature and had little wisdom about the way the world works. I didnt understand the concept of opportunities drying up and doors closing. |

I think I pissed them off bc I deferred a year. And they were still gonna give me the scholarship! But then I was like "lol no" and stayed in NYC so I could continue living with my parents and getting high with my friends

Part of it was that I had never been denied anything I seriously wanted in my life and I just felt that this was the way the world was and that lifes largesse would just continue for me indefinitely. I wantrd to go to prep school and I got into a program that sends minority kids to private school and I got into brearly and chapin. Then I wanted to go to stuy and I got in and went. Then I wanted to go to yale. Then I wanted to go to law school. I didnt understand that these were precious gifts that most people would kill for.
Now at 38 when I am thinking of retirement and helping my parents in old age the idea of being a T10 grad lawyer with no debt is amazing to me. But back then it was just like oh well I can always be a lawyer. Or professor. Or doctor. Warren buffet said he wanted to give his kids enough $ that they could do anyting but not enough that they could do nothing and I think that is an incredibly wise position to take.
People always say that youth is wasted on the young and I guess they are right.
In many ways my professional life mirrors my relationship s with men. I have been proposed to twice but turned both guys down bc I was sure that therr would always be a long succession of guys available to woo princess me. Now I don't really remember what was wrong with either of them. |
