Finally, a lot of times, these people just want to veg out and watch screens all day and let their life waste away into nothing. Or alternatively they go and travel too much. It helps that Mom doesn't articulate anything that concerns ideology or belief systems to the kids, she just isn't involved. Still, the kids know that Mom doesn't like church, and they know that I do, so the kids can sense we aren't on the same page on this.
It also hurts that Mom hates that I take the kids on Sundays because she doesn't like that I have to get out of bed, get them ready, etc. Any event that requires the kids to look nice will always entail some degree of struggle to get the kids ready. However, the kids like going, we either walk or take the golf cart, and once we leave the house my wife just watches TV by herself until we come home.
But yea, it's not ideal, but I appreciate that the children's spiritual upbringing is left entirely to me and I really take this responsibility as seriously as I can. |

Edit: I'm more referring to the fact that it doesn't seem like a big deal to just spend one hour a week in the church to stay together as a family. Obviously faith itself is difficult. |

It's more of a problem with her thinking - which seems focused on satisfying needs on a minute by minute basis. She suffers from panic attack meltdowns pretty frequently, so it seems she spends most of her time on Earth just moving from one "I want this now" to the next "I want this now," but does so with an urgency as if she gets upset she can spiral out of control at any moment. The greater questions of life don't bother her, it is more of "I am tired now" - so she has to lay down, or "I am hungry and want pizza," so she would be focused on getting pizza. There just isn't much more going on than that, and having a robust spirituality does nothing to resolve the pressing issue of something like "it's nice out and I want a new outfit," or something like that. |

There are way more people that have no business being parents having kids than there are people not having any kids.
Life is just too fragile and some people cannot handle that uncertainty. With being educated comes a stronger desire to be in control and stronger awareness of what all can go wrong.
Also, we are no longer peasants producing labor units. These kids need to be sustained and educated for extended period of time till they can be independent. Many people don't want to do that and I can understand that. |

If we want people to have kids we have to incentivize them to do it in some way. Giving them money isn’t enough (pro natalist handouts to parents don’t actually work in practice). We have to give them status, and an overwhelming amount of it, enough to more than offset the massive burden of having and raising children. It has to be socially unacceptable to be a childless bachelor or an old maid. And keep in mind that I’m saying this as a childless bachelor myself

I think people significantly underestimate the impact of economic incentives/viability on people having kids. Some of these aren't direct but still have massive impact. For example, setting up careers takes much longer, people wait until they're settled in their career to pursue marriage/kids, that means many don't seriously start on that until their 30s which also reduces the number of kids they will ultimately have. Another aspect is that people move around for schools/jobs readily and combined with smaller families, you don't have the large extended families that share the burden of raising kids. |

if there is any silver lining, i do like that it has made it easier for women who would make bad mothers and who aren't presidisposed to motherhood to have children, many of whom are lesbians. also, homeschooling and trad family subculture is booming right now.

Whenever they get together it's incompatible with kid-having. Like some all-night rave or travel to nightlife destination or music festival so wife and I can't even get a babysitter and I'd have to go alone or skip. We've made friends with kid havers and do stuff like dinners/drinks early enough to have a babysitter or resort vacation where kids can hang at the pool while adults day-drink. But old friends still act like they're young adults, partying till 5am, crashing on a couch then brunch at 2pm. Even if I didn't have kids I'd prefer not to waste the day sleeping and brunching. If I propose doing something else they act like it's some huge imposition and it's my problem I decided to have kids. They've even explicitly planned shit to make it impossible to bring kids as they don't want the existential crisis harshing their buzzes. New friends are cool, but it's not the same making friends as adults, and the kid-havers we've made friends with are all like 10 years older than us.
