Anyone know why USA gymnastics women have become THICK+CHUNKIER over the years?

by contrast, here's the romanian women's gymnastics team that won gold in 2000. they fit the mold for women's gymnastics body types for as long as i remember.

going far back in time, you'll notice the female gymnasts, whether romanian or russian or chinese or american, to be rail thin and prepubescent looking, delicate and dainty. one might reasonably conclude that this was the optimal body type for gymnastics.
something seems to have changed in the mid 2010's, whereby darker, swarthier, more robust body types have begun to dominate in women gymnastics, where previously this wasn't thought possible |

sure some of them have thick, stubby legs and a rounder posterior but they look functional and carved out of muscle. jade carey's trunk looks like it has an extra 5 pounds of fat cushion that isn't used for anything sports-related.

the drift in body type happened alongside a drift in age. so the difficulty of getting muscle on a young girl is not the reason since they're not young anymore |

Likewise, while an adolescent with nothing else to do all day but eat and train can pack on muscle more quickly than you or I can, that process also still takes years.
In other words, my point treats the rise in age and musculature as closely associated, whereas you seem to be suggesting they're... coincidental? |

this is not unique. If you looked at an NCAAF roster from 2000 and 2024 you'd be surprised at how much bigger and fitter they are today, even in what seems like a relatively short time period (it's actually a long time and you are old :)) |

Is the silverback physique better for playing tennis than the maria sharpova physique? Of fucking course it is. Are there downsides for every other part of your life? Obviously, and multiple WTA players have said that they refrain from going to far in that direction for purely aesthetic reasons b/c they want to look like women. And bear in mind the WTA pays a far greater number of women far more, for far longer, than gymnastics (which basically gives olympians only a window of NIL opportunities in their teens and early 20s). |
