Subject: or Yashar depending on how the election turns out

Perhaps a per capita arrear, paid to the Israeli MoD, can be levied from the community in exchange for the current arrangement being respected. As I understand it, in very brief terms, the state's argument is "they need to pay their fair share for the defense of the community and the general welfare" and the Hasidic arguments in return range from "Our religious duties and practices are the first line of defense for the Israeli people" (a very strong argument to and for true believers) and "the exceptions are ancient and traditional" as well as less tangible and more controversial ones like "The Islamists are attacking the Israeli state; not necessarily the Israeli people". Both sides have good points

I am also personally surprised that Hasidic communities don't volunteer more of their own to help with "the costs of defense" in non-combat roles; perhaps volunteering young men and women's time and some small portion of yeshiva collections to help repair damage done by missile strikes and more. This would be a step to show some gratitude for the unfortunate necessity of the Israeli state's defense policies while also helping the abstractions of conflict be understood more directly by people on the ground experiencing displacement

Regarding the latter argument that I have heard mentioned by a Hasidic-sympathetic opinion piece I think that while this may be true in an ideal sense and is something to consider and perhaps work towards that it would still be extremely foolish to abandon the defense of the state's borders and national sovereignty in hopes that armed groups against the existence of the state of Israel will be intelligent and spiritually mature enough to make such a lofty distinction without error

As for another linked issue relating to the current foreign policy arrangement: from an American perspective regarding US aid to Israel it's important to note that the *defense* payments are in no small part just a domestic jobs program to keep the R&D lights on at domestic defense producers and there is some benefit to American industry to the current arrangement. Israel is a testing ground for US defense systems and platforms at present.

Whether or not keeping those R&D lights on at Raytheon is a general good for the American people is another difficult question entirely and one that I struggle with myself. The defense industry produces things both great and life-giving as well as terrible and destructive and there is much to consider and sort through when regarding the topic

I think that, LARPing as a biblical judge, I'd probably side with the hasidim on the matter as it stands currently and then offer an alternative negotiated solution to keep the present arrangement amiable
