The Magna Carta: The nobles revolted in 1215 and forced King John to sign the Magna Carta, whose principal purpose was to cancel the bonds of the money-lenders and to abolish usury. His heir Edward I passed statutes abolishing all forms of usury, and in 1290 Edward expelled the entire Jewish population of 16,511, one of over 100 expulsions of the Jews recorded throughout European history. With newly tolerable taxes, no state debt and no interest to pay, England then enjoyed a period of unparalleled growth and prosperity. The average laborer worked 14 weeks a year and enjoyed 160-180 days of holiday. In their spare time the craftsmen volunteered their skills in building some of England’s magnificent cathedrals, which reinforces one of the basic tenets of Western civilization that without leisure time, the fostering of culture is not possible.
