openAI figured out who bugged their premises by simply looking through everyone's chatgpt queries and finding a match

google and other search engines never had this capability. we've actually *regressed* in terms of consumer digital freedom and autonomy

very cool stuff goys

Google etc actually do have that capability and both google and law enforcement use it (via duces tecum orders)...

Which is why you should use startpage and duckduckgo.

google can look through its entire past user search library for all users and pinpoint exactly which user searched for a specific term(s) and when?

looks like the government has only gotten google to do this a handful of times

but they do have the technical capability to do so

the difference that immediately comes to mind is that the frontier AI companies have already proven themselves to be willing to search through private user queries to serve their own private interests (math research, now this internal security issue)

there haven't been any public instances of google doing this

it's all anonymized otherwise. even user profiles are. there aren't google employees idly sifting through data, looking up info on girls they have a crush on

whereas openAI and anthropic clearly use their technology to actively do this

No it isnt lol. And govts definitely asked google for this data more than a handful of times—you only hear about it when they challenge the orders, otherwise they are sealed.

Yes. They save it for 9 months for non-logged-in users (indexed by IP address and cross referenced by cookies across IP addresses and devices), but save it indefinitely for logged in users. If you are a logged in user who requests to delete it, they will delete your username from the queries in the log but it will still be indexed by IP address and cookies until the 9 month period has ended.
