I'm on the left and I opposed Proposition 50 in California. Alas, it passed in a landslide. Just fighting disenfranchisement with disenfranchisement, no big deal, what could possibly go wrong?

crrrrr
i don't blame ca for redistricting in response to conservative states (of course there is a lot of debate on "who started it"). but the celebration of it is disgusting. you're the only other person ive seen express this. it seems like we're so partisan that people only think in terms of whether it's a "win" for their side.

Oh please, it's funny. And if it spurs shitcons to realize that we need legislation at the federal level to require independent commissions for redistricting, then it's a win for everyone.

how would you ensure it's fair and independent?
i don't think it's possible. any commission will be biased. even if you made it bipartisan it would be biased in favor of maintaining a two party duopoly.
the only thing that can move the needle is returning to a zeitgeist where we recognize disenfranchising people you disagree with is bad.

iowa is a small state, probably more receptive to common sense shit like "don't disenfranchise your people", and is already dominated by one party (no need to gerrymander.)

A zeitgeist! And a duopoly! lol dude. Politics has always been cutthroat. In the past state parties may have been more likely to cut deals with each other to minimize gerrymandering. But that was just to preserve incumbents, not to increase participation and competition. Several states have had success with independent commissions, including California before their recent referendum. That's far and away the best solution.

"politics has always been cuthroat and indepdenent commissions work until they want to gerrymander."
ok, then how would independent commissions address the issue when you're saying this is the nature of politics and gerrymandering still happens after a commission is established?

Seems like your thinking is pretty absolutist. Of course you can take radical steps to dissolve your commission. I think in the case of a federal bill, you would predicate federal funding to states for elections on the existence of a commission and procedural safeguards.

how is that absolutist? i just asked you how you'd ensure fairness and independence and you launched into that screed.
ok, let's say this commission was created tomorrow and will oversee the midterms. you believe that this commission, with trump as the chief executive, would ensure fairer state elections?

"ok, let's say this commission was created tomorrow and will oversee the midterms. you believe that this commission, with trump as the chief executive, would ensure fairer state elections?"
What are you babbling about? I'm not talking about a federal commission. Elections are run by the states. Bipartisan state commissions that draw maps have a proven track record of success, at least relative to the alternatives. You can easily incentivize the creation of said commissions the same way we incetivized states to raise the drinking age to 21.

you're talking about a federal commission that allocates funding to states to incentive them to maintain fairness and procedural safeguards. im asking you if such a commission was created today whether you believe it would be used to promote fairness or whether it would be used to the advantage of the administrations party?
