OpenAI declares an existence proof for quantum field theories with gauge fields and fermions in four dimensions, including quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and a unified completion of the Standard Model, and presents pure Yang-Mills theory as a subproblem that is "part" of the Clay Mathematics Institute millennium problem.
The choice of words matters. Pure Yang-Mills theory describes only how gluons (the particles that carry the strong force) interact with each other, without quarks. The millennium problem, in its official formulation, also asks for a second requirement, the so-called mass gap, which OpenAI's page does not claim. The text stops at existence and says the work leans on Balaban's approach to constructive field theory. |
