The Village sounds retarded based just on the screenplay, but I rewatched it recently and thought the execution was very enjoyable. Guessing rewatching the sixth sense would be similar.

I think Francis Ford Coppola is the clear winner here. He has multiple all time greats and multiple absolute disasters that make you wonder how he ever made a hit. Both Twixt and Megalopolis were insanely bad. Godfather 2 and Apocalypse Now may be the best movies ever made.

hard to argue with this. everything since The Rainmaker has been terrible.
a special mention for John McTiernan who had a great run from Predator through 13th Warrior, then went to jail for the dumbest reasons and now makes crackpot political grudge movies about himself

James Cameron just directed a Billie Eilish concert film that bombed horribly cause she is a fat sentient can of monster energy drink so honorable mention to him

He also directed Piranha 2: The Awakening which makes him a candidate for this list. I think he flips out and leaves if an interviewer ever mentions that turd.

I bought the Complete Kubrick collection on Criterion $480 for his entire filmography on 4k. Once it arrives I can watch the ones I'm missing (Spartacus and Lolita) and poast a Kubrick tier list. Stay tuned

Funhouse is great. I know there is some debate over who actually did the work, but Poltergeist is great. And I have a giant soft spot for Invaders from Mars.

I haven't seen the Invaders remake but I think Funhouse is incredibly effective and underrated. Poltergeist is too.
I think the right answer is the obvious one of Coppola, here. Maybe Cameron although from what I've heard he wasn't even in the driver's seat in Piranha 2 enough to properly lay it at his door.

Coppola, as discussed above.
but because "Jaws" is so nearly perfect, Spielberg is in second place. it could be "1941" or "‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" or "Ready Player One" or "Hook."

there was a japanese director named Kon Ichikawa who made some of the most acclaimed war movies in history (burmese harp; fires on the plain), and then he was hired in the late-60's to do a feature film with the italian mouse character Topo Gigio. he wanted to make a somewhat serious 'message movie' about nuclear war, but the italians wanted a goofy puppet film, and it ended up becoming a baffling, bizarre, awful production called The Missile War. minimalist sets, weird janky plot, jarring tonal shifts, etc:

I don’t know enough about film to have meaningful input on the director. But I do know enough about human nature to be pretty sure that it’ll be some guy who debased himself for a giant paycheck, probably because he let his overhead run wild and got painted into a financial corner.
