He just turned 88, has CLL. He couldn't take chemo so they have been keeping him alive with blood transfusions but his last one was a month ago and they told him no more. After his last blood test 2.5 weeks ago they gave him 3 weeks to live.
I flew out to see him last week, canceled all my hearings and trials, spent a good five days with him.
What really sucks is that his mind is still there and he was able to stand up and walk on his own, but he has his oxygen he has to carry around everywhere.
I took him to Walmart every day. Every day he needed something. One day it was double sided tape. Another day it was tie-downs.
I heard him telling his friend on the phone he can't stop thinking about dying. My mom says he has constant panic attacks now, nightmares about dying, its all he thinks about.
He won't even take my calls anymore because he's going over the cliff and he knows it.
The last time I Facetimed him I could see death in his eyes and watching him crawl into his bed at night was like watching him crawl into his coffin.
Carpe diem brothers. One day we will all be there.

Sorry to hear that.
Re the needing something from the store everyday, my grandmother did the same with my dad before she died. I don’t know what it is psychologically that causes that.

Thanks, bro. For my dad, he's never been able to sit still. He's always been super active so even though he wouldn't admit it, he just wanted to get out and pretend everything was normal.

i'm sorry to hear this. i struggle with mortality myself, so i need to find religion or inner peace of some kind, or i'm going to be in your dad's position when the time comes. that sounds really terrifying.
if there's a silver lining here, it's that you got to spend time with him before he goes. i got a call one saturday morning in 2016 from my dad's phone. i picked it up ready to shoot the shit (in sign language lmao), but i was looking at a doctor with a facemask telling me my dad died in the hospital from a heart attack. definitely wasn't expecting that.

the invention of iphones and text messaging and internet porn probably was life changing for deaf ppl. meanwhile blind ppl have had to deal with listening to the same shitty music they have their whole lives because nothing good has come out since like 2002.

deaf people are fucking weird and insane bro. i grew up around them. for starters, the women are nymphos (my mom in particular, she is a whore). they make all these weird noises when they "talk" (most of them do, anyway). and many of them think being deaf is cool and they pride themselves on having deaf kids. i had a close friend growing up who was hearing but his sister (lesbian) was deaf. fuckin weird man.

your parents are/were boomers. paradigm shifts in the last 15 years or so in how people communicate, work and engage in society seem to be of benefit to the deaf.
boomers just yack back and forth to each other and that probably was frustrating for the deaf.

In San Diego deaf people would come up to you and hand you a free sign language card. I'm all like, "Cool, thanks!" but the deaf person doesn't go away, they start making weird grunts or noises and then I realize they want money for the thing so I handed it back and he got all mad. That happened 2-3 times.

I read this poast to my entire firm and everyone burst out lol. Actually, I read it to two paralegals first and their laughter was so spontaneous and loud that I decided to share it with the rest of the firm. True scholarship.

he's 88, thats a long time, he lived past life expectancy
if he lived longer whats the point? 90 and 100 doesnt sound fun, it just gets worse
why are old ppl afraid of det? at some point doesnt life just get tiring and u lived enough, it seems stupid just to exist for the point of existing and having a nursing home take care of u or something

thank you for crystallizing it like that. I planned on saying something like that to him when I was there, but he doesn't want to talk about death and I was afraid I'd trigger more thoughts of death. He seemed content just to have me near him.

My condolences. I lost my father earlier this year; he also had CLL, but that wasn't what caused his death. There's nothing anyone can do or say that will make it easier. Cherish the moments you have left.

Very very sorry to hear brother. You're not alone in it and neither is he.
Drop me a line if you want to talk about any of it or need to take your mind off of it. Lost my mother 10 years ago to cancer. My father had cancer twice, has Parkinson's, now has dementia and declining at an astonishing rate.
I'm currently caring for my father-in-law, who also has Parkinson's and early dementia.

I used to think this, but caring for your elderly parent when they are truly & finally helpless is a way you can show your love for them instead of doing a basic calculus like "its over just, let it be quick"

My grandfather died around the same age last week. He was perfectly fine, cognitively the same as he always was but slower on his feet. Was riding some dumb scooter thing for old people, drove off a curb and fell off. Police took him to urgent care and then he went home and acted funny for 2-3 days, saying and doing weird shit and then died suddenly.

Mine died in 2013 but this was after I had already spent 15ish years watching gore videos online so his slow cancer death didn’t phase me one bit. It was more humane than what I saw going down every other hour somewhere.

I didn't make it in time. He had already passed when I got there at 10:30 am on Saturday. I was able to kiss his forehead and say goodbye, watch them take him out draped in American flag (he was a veteran and is going to be buried at Arlington).
