"Interview-based case study of six universities in Scotland: in a country that never voted for Thatcher, and with a tradition of "democratic intellectualism," neoliberal pressures threaten the social values of higher education. To examine this phenomenon, I look to sociology, a discipline focused on contemporary social change. Alongside classic and recent scholarship, the experiences of 35 academic sociologists at six Scottish universities shed light on the changing structures of higher education, and the threats carried by those changes."

My PhD was granted in November 2010, examining the negative consequences of running universities like businesses - abstract & more information on the academic page. I'm currently working as a teaching associate at the University of Strathclyde, and my other work can be found in the writing section. Thanks for

Unfortunately, liberals will not be able to blame the evil private lenders anymore for a huge chunk of the loan problem - Staffords. Now they are having to point their finger at the real problem, which is the federal guarantee
THE OTHER PROBLEM IS SIMPLY NON-ELITE AVERAGE FAGGOTS BELIEVING THEMSELVES TO BE OF SOME IMPORT IN THE WORLD DUE TO THEIR 1ST PLACE FINISH IN THEIR SHITTY HS

yeah this chick could've gotten some kind of real estate agent job in L.A. during the house-flipping bubble peak around 2005-07. Could've made bank for a few years.

There is something fundamentally wrong with our high school and college system. It basically tries to make every high school a private prep school. There's a huge class bias, as if WASP finance d00ds are chosen due to merit...

My brother went to a TTTT private university that was like 30k a year, but he was on like on a 95% scholarship so he graduated with zero debt. Most of these TTTT schools give out ridiculous financial aid if you cracked like 1200 on the SAT. The only people paying sticker or anything close to sticker are complete MORONS.
PLENTY OF 1300 SAT FAGGOT POOR STRIVERS TAKING ON A FULL 4 YEARS OF DEBT TO GO TO NYU, USC, TUFTS, WUSTL, CARLETON, GRINNELL, OBERLIN, MIAMI U OF OHIO, NOTRE DAME, BOSTON COLLEGE, BOSTON UNIVERSITY....

"Getting to the library was becoming impossible, so I took out a $1,500 loan to buy a laptop. It was my first experience of a private student loan, and I was told it wasn't much different from a federal loan. The interest was slightly higher, and there were slightly different rules, but overall it all seemed the same."
Different interest, different rules, but the same. lolwut?
"After Christmas, the overload became too much, and I had to prioritize. I decided that leadership and education were more important than meaningless employment, so I quit my job and took out another $2,000 private loan."

No, the lenders job is to turn a profit. They don't need EVERY student to pay back loans to do that. They simply need the aggregate risk/reward to pay off.
This chick is in debt because of her own stupid decisions.

The problem is your fault my Republican chum. Most universities have no right to their non-profit status because they are basically run like for-profits. The school has a duty to edumicate its kiddos about their IRL job prospects. The loans by themselves are not a problem if the schools were operating like a legit non-profit should and not like a for profit business. Tax the schools for their vulture like behavior and it will change.

The article makes it very clear she took at a substantial amount of private loans.
But this issue is superfluous anyway. Private or govt backed, nobody put a gun to her head to go to a notoriously expensive private school to acquire a dubious eduction in liberal arts.

She graduated with 36K in debt from USC. Overall, I think that's a good value proposition, even if you graduate with a traditionally useless history, English, or anthropology degree. If you graduate with a useful degree, it's a very good move. She basically paid <1/4th Sticker.
Her mistakes were this:
1) Thinking she is too good for a job in Real Estate or Human Resources or something;
2) Deciding to get an "alternative" Master's Degree, in Scotland, about "studying social change."
She could've made a large dent in her loans, but instead decided to take on more and allow them to balloon. She apparently graduated in 2001, so she had about 5-7 years of economic prosperity in which to find a well-paying job to pay down her loans, but didn't. Life fail.

"My second year, USC's tuition fees increased by $2,000, and my mother's income increased by $1,000. Ironically, this pushed our family out of the 'low-income' category, and I lost half of my grant money."
I think she's either lying to make a good story, or doesn't understand the system.
I've never heard of a fin-aid formula that says parents make +1000, finaid goes down $10,000.

"My third year, I attended Edinburgh University in Scotland, where tuition fees were half of USC's. That year, I needed only a $4,000 loan, and didn't have to worry about a job. But the next year brought hardly any grant money, and rather than give up in the 'home stretch,' I took out more loans than I ever expected I'd need."
Seems that USC gives out big first year grants to attract students, then cuts it down once they are there.

Why would she borrow all that money to study stupid shit? If she's going to walk around saying she's working class, then the credited thing to have studied on scholarship would be engineering or something that "working class" people with any sense would give their right arms to study.
