Season 7 had a few good episodes, but no great ones (well, maybe the finale, which was strong). I used to think s1 was the worst, but now I wonder if it's actually better than 7. It was a hot mess, but had some campy energy. In, the final stretch of TNG, starting maybe with the last leg of s6, many episodes just got tedious.

In rewatching it all recently it was fairly stark. Primarily because the lib worldview that created it is basically just Jeb Bush Republicanism. I think we'd all be fine going back to libs being like this.
There's a whole episode where some bitch from a "genderless" planet falls in love with Riker. Turns out the planet she's from literally forces genderless ideology on its people and lobotomizes anyone who goes against it. LMAO.
Meanwhile all the regular TNG characters speak about gender and sex as being totally connected, the natural sex differences that exist, why women like men and vice versa, etc.

That one is pretty funny. It's ham-handedly supposed to be about homosexuality and how it's No Different from heterosexuality
Uh yeah except it is you faggot libs. Men fucking each other in their poop holes and being unable to have children is not the same thing as natural, evolution-derived heterosexuality

Oh yeah I agree. It is just so stark to see how the libs used such an analogy back then. Even libs then understood the idea that "gender fluidity" was so retarded that it could only exist as a fake idea on a fake alien world.
I will also note that there aren't any fags on the show. Literally no fags and no jews.
the Ferengi are moneygrubbers, the Founders are like Jews in that they were persecuted and became evil imperialists in response, the Cardassians are like Israeli violent fascist occupiers

The founders and ferengi are both very clearly meant to be jews. The show would never be made today. And yeah the Cardassian - Bajoran dynamic would make it even less likely, lol

DS9 is the GOAT POTUS Star Trek series. Sisko is the conservahero commander/captain we deserve. Plus DS9 (mostly) makes the ferengi pcs instead of npcs. You won’t regret watching it.

@grok, when did tng use a diagnostic other than level one
TNG mentioned a Level 1 diagnostic far more often than any other number. Lower numbers are more thorough (and slower/more disruptive); higher numbers are quicker and more automated. The TNG Technical Manual defines five levels, and the show used 2–5 on occasion.
Level 2
• “Tin Man”
• “Remember Me” — Geordi has the computer run a Level 2 on the warp drive systems (“Antimatter containment positive. Warp drive within normal parameters.”)
• “A Fistful of Datas” — Level 2 on the computer / information-retrieval systems
• “Aquiel” — Level 2 on the comm buffers at Relay Station 47
Level 3
This is the next-most-common after Level 1.
• “The Nth Degree” — Geordi uses a Level 3 diagnostic as a pretext while talking to the newly super-intelligent Barclay; later asks for Barclay’s help with one
• “Schisms”
• “Cause and Effect” — they decide to run a Level 3 on all systems after seeing the repeating “3” on the monitors
• “Aquiel”
• “The Chase”
• “Phantasms”
• Star Trek Generations — Lt. Farrell asks to run a Level 3 on the port plasma relays
Level 4
• “Relics” — Scotty reconfigured the Jenolan transporter into a Level 4 diagnostic cycle so his pattern could sit in the buffer for 75 years
• “Cost of Living” — a Level 4 missed faults in the replicators’ orientation terminals
• “Genesis” — Barclay wants a Level 4 on the torpedo guidance / phase discriminator (it would require shutting down auxiliary power to 19 decks)
Level 5
• “Half a Life”
• “The Mind’s Eye” — “Perform a level-5 diagnostic”
Other non-numbered diagnostics
• “Power Play” — O’Brien puts the transporters into diagnostic mode that will take hours
• “Cause and Effect” — Crusher runs an optical diagnostic on Geordi’s VISOR
• Data occasionally runs a self-diagnostic (e.g., “Schisms”, “A Fistful of Datas”)
Level 1 still dominates because it is the “take it offline and physically check it” option writers reached for when something important (especially transporters or the computer) was acting up. The other levels appear when they needed a faster check or a specific plot beat.

i've tried TOS but i've never been able to get into it. it's just too cheesy for me. i would actually love a very "serious" "realistic" version of star trek. i think that's why i like TNG so much; it's the most like that among all of the star trek series

TOS is great, it's like the Twilight Zone or X-Files monster of the week in space. It's light on the realism because the Enterprise is just the vehicle to explore some idea or story.

i dumped voyager and started watching ds9 instead
so much better right from the start. voyager was way gayer and libbier than i remember. also neelix really, really sucks. he's like jar jar binks but maybe even more faggoty and annoying

all of the series start out a bit awkward and then get steadily better over time as the actors and writers get comfortable with the series and with each other
voyager is just total ass at the beginning though. neelix is a prominent character on the show and in most episodes and it's just really bad

Really enjoying rewatching DS9. I remembered it as my favorite Trek series but I'm surprised by how much better it's holding up than even TNG does
TNG tries a little too hard to "say something" with each episode. DS9 is a lot more comfortable just telling stories and developing characters. And the Dominion conflict and eventually war is interesting as a background narrative/device that enables a lot
