"Tom Cruise’s new movie Digger looks headed for the record books. Just not the record books the actor likely hoped for when signing up for the film.
According to reports, Digger — the first non-action movie that Tom Cruise is starring in in over a decade — could potentially become the biggest box office bomb of 2026, as it’s tracking to make just $12 million in its opening weekend — a number that will likely drop precipitously in its second weekend following likely poor word-of-mouth.
Despite being a drama film, Digger — which was greenlit at $125 million — saw its budget climb to $160 million-$180 million after production went over schedule. For comparison, the biggest box office bomb of 2025 was the Jared Leto-starring Tron: Ares, which lost a reported $130 million."

I can't wait to see it, it sounds horrible. These mexican directors are solidly 115 IQ which is genius level down there and they never got humbled by being around smarter people until their formative years were over. The Revenant is the only good film ever made by a Mexican auteur

Inarritu made Revenant (and Birdman, which while not GREAT was certainly well made and interesting) so he should have been able to make a GOAT with $180 million + Tom Cruise. Obviously satire can be great but why can't modern Hollywood make it the least bit subtle or interesting (see also Don't Look Up)

Fair. I don't really remember it at all except I don't find Emma Stone sexy, I like Michael Keaton, and I didn't like the pretentious official title and weird punctuation of the movie

No I can appreciate an ambitious bomb. But this was just dreary shit. Tom Cruise put in a good performance tbf. But to no end. The script is just horrible

MAGAZINE: The near-apocalyptic critical and commercial failure of the big-screen satire Digger should be taken as the most encouraging of cultural indicators.
Here is a movie that is so deeply woke in its ideas and attitudes that it deserves to be called pre-woke. Director and cowriter Alejandro G. Inarritu’s outraged portrayal of a venal, lawless, environment-destroying oil tycoon (Tom Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell) suggests someone who has only recently become acquainted with the news of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, and his eagerness to display his own card-carrying climate warrior credentials — the United States’s exit from the Paris climate accords is actually referenced at one point — suggests someone who has just watched the 2006 Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth. In other words, this is the perfect movie for Greta Thunberg, in her “How dare you!” mode, around 2019 or so.
That the public has emphatically rejected this movie’s dumb, dated virtue-signaling and odious attempts at humor is a real cause for hope.
Digger is now on course to be the biggest box office flop of all time, with its second weekend ticket sales dropping by a huge 60 per cent.
During its opening weekend, Tom Cruise and director Alejandro G Iñárritu's critically panned satire grossed just $8million (£6million) in US cinemas, with international sales of $12million (£9million) from 74 countries.
Ticket sales for the movie declined by 60 per cent in its second weekend, bringing its tally to $14.4million domestically and $35.3million globally.
Industry insiders report that the movie is now tracking to lose a huge $245million (£185million) in its theatrical run, with its estimated global box office total to be just $50million.
Variety reports that the movie needs $350million globally to break even because cinema owners get to keep about half of ticket sales.
Warner Bros. greenlit the film for $125million, but the budget soared to an estimated $180million after production went over schedule. The studio then spent another $100million on marketing, which has seen leading man Cruise in megadrive mode fronting months of teasers and social media campaigns.

If the estimates pan out and Digger does lose $245million, it would put the film among the biggest box office bombs of all time.
With $161million in losses, Disney's 2012 flop John Carter holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest flop in history.
