some of those are pretty common in Baltimore (esp. yell-uh, warsh, youse, crown). But in the 18 years i lived in Baltimore i never heard most of the others. and ive NEVER heard anyone from anywhere in MD say "Bawlmer."

The I-95 corridor (suburban DC, Baltimore and surrounding area, etc) of MD is very un-Southern. But huge portions of the state on either side of the corridor are more southern than they are northeastern. No question about it. Try going out to western MD and the eastern shore.
It should be southern, but it didnt secede. I think it was the only slave state that didnt.
The people who are talking about the eastern shore and western md being southern are morons. Every state has country areas, that doesnt make it southern. The true test is actually how you cook crabs. Yankees steam them, Southerners boil them. MD is famous for its steamed blue crabs.
Eastern shore is southern. Its tidewater, and the Tidewater is most certainly not a northern or northeast region. The shore and southern MD was an area of plantations, slaves, small farms and villages, and a slow, lazy, pattern of life that revolved around the bay and crops.
In other words, SOUTHERN.
Baltimore has lost much of its southernism, but not too long ago (up through the 1970s) much of Baltimore had southern antecedents. The city was pro-confederacy during the war, and after the war many southerners moved to Baltimore to try to restore their fortunes. Unlike other Northern cities, Baltimore was staunchly Jim Crow.
Today, old money Baltimore or what's left of it still has stronger ties to the south than to the north.
As for the rest of the state: decidedly mid-Atlantic. Central and Western MD were anti-slavery regions settled by Germanic people in the 18th century, and much of central MD has more in common with PA than with the rest of the state. Western MD is WVA lite.

Have none of you people seen The Wire on HBO? If not, go rent it today b/c it's far and away the best show on TV. Many varieties of MD accent to be heard on the show, but Baltimoron is well-documented (being that it's set in BMore). And the accent bolsters the argument against MD being part of the south and for the mid-atlantic being a seperate region since it's very similar to accents in Philly and S. Jersey and completely distinct from how people talk in S. VA or NC.
